Fun Facts about Peru:

- Lima (where I will be staying) is the largest city and the capital of Peru.
- Peru is located in South America along the Pacific Ocean.
- It is the third largest country in South America.
- There are about 31.8 million people living in Peru.
- There is no national religion, thought Roman Catholic is the most popular religion
- There are three national languages in Peru: Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara
- Flag colors: Red and White

Climate:
- Peru is split into three different regions:
+ The Coast - there is a narrow desert strip along the Pacific Ocean
+ Peruvian Highlands - the area of the Andean Mountains
+ The Amazon Rainforest - is about 57% of the country's territory
- April through October is winter, but it is still 65-85 degrees F along the coast.
- December - March are the summer months and they are much more wet.

Money:
-The economy of Peru is based on the different climates found in the country.

School System:
School is typically free for children who are aged 7-16. These students follow this schedule:
1 year of pre-school education, age 5
6 years of primary education, ages 6-11 (where I will be teaching!)
5 years of secondary school, ages 11-16
2 years of general secondary education
then (if desired)
3 years of academic secondary school
or
3 years of technical secondary education
Their main subjects are mathematics, communication, art, personal development, physical education, religious education, science and environment.
The language of instruction is Spanish. Many schools also offer classes in English.

al toque - right away (might mean in a few hours or a few weeks)
bróder - brother/friend (from english "brother")
chamba - work/employment
fuiste - the moment has gone
jama - food
miercoles - literally "wednesday" but use instead of a swear word
pitri mitri - "awesome!"
pisco sour - most popular drink in Peru
yapa - extra
coca cola - going crazy
